Gardens in Muszyna
For decades, Muszyna functioned as the younger sister of Krynica-Zdrój—a spa town with its own springs and history, but usually mentioned second in the tourist imagination. In the middle of the last decade, the city authorities decided to change that.
On the hills surrounding the center, in the Zapopradzie district, new themed gardens began to emerge: sensory, biblical, fairy tales and legends, antique, and Chinese. Each with a different narrative program, each designed so that spa guests and tourists would have a reason to spend a whole day in Muszyna, not just an hour on their way through. Chronos was invited to create these designs.
The first project was the Garden of Love, featuring sculptures of Adonis and the Slave Girl, Hebe, Antiope, and Canephora, among others. The selection of figures was well-thought-out: all alluded to themes of love, youth, and the regeneration of nature, thus aligning with the spa's function. Most sculptures were placed on pedestals along the main walking paths; individual pieces found their way deeper into the garden, near the Lovers' Garden with its hornbeam labyrinth.
Garden of Legends
In subsequent years, the Garden of Legends was created: a space where bas-reliefs and freestanding figures tell stories related to the founding of the town. One of the themes is the legend of a brigand digging a well in Muszyna Castle and a maiden who descended to him on a rope to announce that he would find water the next day – this is how our sculptures of Harnas and the Water Maiden came to be.
For the Antique Garden, we prepared Olympian Muses and trellises with columns; in the Classical Garden, we placed Saxon planters and a Versailles fountain; while in the Contemporary Garden, dedicated to 20th-century culture, we featured the Tenth Muse (Film) and modern Rubik planters. In the Chinese Garden, we set up sandstone lamps, a dragon, a lion, and a frog; in the Greek Garden, Italian amphorae and Planta garden bowls. The styles vary; what remains constant is the craftsmanship and the hand-finished quality of each element.
Muszyna Market Square
The latest chapter of work in Muszyna is the revitalisation of the market square from 2019–2021, accompanying the construction of a new Galician-style town hall, erected on the foundations of its predecessor. On one side of the square, we designed a classicising fountain with a multimedia system — several light and water scenarios, including variants for national holidays, in the colours of the Muszyna coat of arms. Around the square, historicising parking bollards were installed, made according to individual designs, as well as a pillory and planters, including Provençal Planters. The details of the small architecture are deliberately subdued — their role is to support the square's composition, not to compete with the mass of the town hall.
New gardens are being created in Muszyna. Our cooperation continues, and we are adding more sculptures and objects to the collection wherever the compositional whole requires it.
